Chinese Painting VS Oil Painting

Pigment: oil painting is oil-based and oil-colored, Chinese painting uses ink, or Chinese painting pigments (including mineral pigments and plant pigments). Quality: oil painting is drew on linen, Chinese painting is on rice paper.

Style of painting: oil painting is covered for many times, usually thicker, abstract, figurative and impressional; Chinese painting is partly blank and partly with inscriptions, with an emphasis on unrealistic prospect.

Oil painting belongs to the west and Chinese painting is our local stuff. Chinese painting can be a picture of four seasons. With a cavalier perspective, the line itself implies a kind of spirit. The oil painting can be only with focus perspective.

Chinese painting mainly uses lines, contours, and elegant screen to achieve the artistic mood, while oil painting takes light, shadow, truth, and bright screen to express the real world. Moreover, the painting pigments of the above two kinds are quite different. Chinese painting is concerned with more water and elegant color pigment, but oil painting majorly focuses on sticky and colorful pigment. Chinese painting leaves people much space to imagine and a peaceful feeling, but oil painting makes people feel true, dimensional and bright.

Chinese traditional Painting refers to -Chinese painting-, which uses brushes, ink, and Chinese painting pigments to draw in a special rice paper or silk. According to the subject, Chinese painting can be divided into portraits, landscapes, flowers, birds, and animals painting. In techniques, there are meticulous painting and free sketch painting with respective features. Figure painting gradually became mature from the late Zhou to Han, Wei, Six dynasties. In each period, there are a lot of innovative painters. Chinese painting has a distinctive national form and a unique style in the field of world’s art. In describing the objects, lines and black color are used to show the shape and texture and combined with poetry, calligraphy and seal cutting to achieve a vivid effect. In addition, there is a unique form of mounting to set the foil painting off in Chinese painting.

Oil painting uses transparent vegetable oil to reconcile the pigments to shape artistic image on cloth, paper, wood and other materials. It originated from Europe and further developed into an important kind of painting in modern times.

It is generally believed that in the early 15th century, the Netherlands painter Yang Van Eyck brothers were the founder of oil painting techniques. Based on the previous attempt to use oil to dissolve pigment, they used linseed oil and walnut oil as a reconciling blender to produce a fluent depiction and form a rich color level and gloss. They used the new painting materials for creation, which was very influential in the art world at that time. The painting techniques soon spread in other countries of Western Europe and rapidly developed especially in Venice Italy.
